Subject: Re: What is the best inline ripper with least soil disturbance

We previously owned an Unverferth inline ripper that had either the std or MRD shanks and currently own a CIH / DMI 2500 with no-till shanks. The Unverferth disturbed a lot more of the surface than does the 2500 but a lot of that was probably due to the difference in shanks. I can't say that I really saw any difference in how hard they pulled. Both would leave large chunks on top at times when you lifted it out of the ground which would make the ends hard to no-till into.

Differences in the two that you may want to consider. The Unferverth used straight points, had wings that could be bolted to the shank if you wanted more lifting action, they offer shank protectors that bolt to the lower sides of the shank and have a replaceable wear bar that mounts to the front of the shank. Or at least they did for our shanks, they may not for the no-till shanks. On the 2500 you can buy several styles of points, we run the 8" winged points. No shank wear strips that I know of & donot have replaceable wear bars for the front of the shanks. Our 2500 is 3 years old & the shanks are shot. Luckily the no-till shanks for the 2500 aren't much higher than the front wearbars for the Unverferth & less than the wear plates & bars together.

Another difference between the 2 machines is the guage wheels. Unferferth's are mounted on the outside of the bar & use a small automotive type tire & angle back. The CIH's are mounted between shanks & use a small tire like used on a lot of headcarts. We have had a lot of problems blowing out tires on the 2500 (blew the sidewalls out of 3 this fall) but think we have solved the problem by going to a heavier ply tire.. Unferferths depth control is a turnbuckle allowing smaller depth adjustment increments than the 2500 which uses a crank with a pin & holes in the arm. 2500 is easier to adjust but your liimited to the hole spacing for changes in depth.
