That unit would have been rigidly held in a hinged frame. The shuttle carrying the warp is thrown through the weft, and the beater bar is used to seat the warp in place.

There's a 150 year old loom in the family that was used 20 years ago for making rugs. Weaving itself is child's play, and I did plenty of it. Stringing the loom is another matter altogether. That's what has kept the rug project from being repeated in recent years. | |
