If you rarely get below zero and have some protection (not out in wide open with 30 mph winds) you should be fine with an energy free.
We put a 2' plastic aeration tube around the riser pipe as deep as the underground pipe and have no issues. You do have to have a few head of cattle using it as your heat source is the incoming water.
