Subject: RE: John Deere 4400 cracking corn problem

Northeast Missouri
What do the cobs look like coming off the concave? You want them mostly whole. If the cobs are broken crosswise or have "scuff" marks on them your concave spacing is too wide. If the cobs are split lengthwise the spacing is too tight. If the spacing is too wide the ears won't be taken through the cylinder smoothly and will hang up momentarily causing cracking. How much corn is coming up the return? There should be very little. That can cause cracking as well. What is your cylinder speed now?
