I can't weld a simple open pipe frame crack together so I should talk.... but my understanding is on a patch over the top as shown, angled edges are better than a weld straight up and down? Obviously where members are welded together there will be straight welds, but on patch work somewhere along a surface the stress will come through a lot quicker on a vertical weld than if one went at an angle with the patch piece?
