how quiet the day was? With no planes in the sky, I remember how quiet it was. All that background noise that we never notice until it is gone.

Yes, I remember that day and maybe a week after. Up here in central ND, a bit more than 100 miles South from Canada, we had something unseen, would fly over about every 15 minutes. definatly a propeller noise , either a turbo prop / turbo fan or well muffled piston engine, as all we could hear was the prop / props. Wondering if it was something like an AWACs radar plane, a drone or who knows what.

We also used to get some terrific air shows, as military planes would do practice mock attacks on each other nearly right above us, running west to east, was a lot of fun to watch with the planes so high that they were just a speck in the sky, but the vapor trails showed the flight paths. This all ended with 9-11, no more free air shows.
