My 3 year old labrador retriever will search for anything he can pick up and bring to you to throw, when he's outside the house with you. Rocks, black walnuts, sticks, short pieces of 2x4s, tufts of grass, etc… If he can pick it up and bring it to you, he will, and then drop it and expect you to pick it up and throw it for him. If you ignore him long enough, he'll eventually wander off and do something himself, but it takes awhile. I usually just leave him in the house if I want to get something done outside.
