NW Central Ohio
I have a feeling the drainage is about the biggest factor in keeping a stand going longer than normal..and then fertility, harvest frequency...and the period of rest you give it before going into dormancy. Stop and think about how much more time a field has to recover after a 3rd cutting in Minnesota..and how much time it has to recover in Missouri. Granted..in Missouri they may look for a 4th cutting...but is that the best use of the stand?..or is strength going into winter more important? I guess it's up to your personal preference (and need for more forage) to decide.
