I use mine for scouting all of the time. I have a phantom 3 and don't like the video option, so I scout the field and when i find something that looks odd fly to it descend and take close up pics or whatever angle need be to get the idea of what is going on. It isn't hard to pick out variety changes, applicator errors, etc.
