Planter hickups? Occasional fat seed plugging the drop tube? Rocks in the soil kicking the planter out of the ground? Wet spots that drowned the seed?

Back when I spilled seed with a cyclo 400 sometimes it missed a whole row for several acres. One time with a slipping drive belt it missed the whole patch. Never had a working monitor. JD 7000 with Kinze brush meter really plants evenly all over the field.
