A stop gap approach would be to cut a 2X6 into pieces that are slightly smaller than the depth of the step. Stack 4 or 5 secured firmly on the right side of the step. Your steps are now 1/2 as high as they were.
My first attempt I used 6X6 blocks but the stacked 2X6 s are better as they conform to the pitch of the ladder.
