For those that grow seed corn for "whoever"company, what % is irrigated? Last fall I was looking through dad's seed salesmans catalog and noticed a "DROUGHT TOLERANCE" category, 90% of the corn crop in this area is non-watered,yet I drive past 1000's of sprinkled acres of seed corn. How can "they" know the tolerance if it is watered??

Seed corn production environment has nothing to do with how they choose or rate the actual end product it produces. They already know what two inbred lines they like to cross to make the hybrid. Thats all been determined over years of research in labs, greenhouses, and field trials.

Those seed corn production acres are simply to create the supply of the desired hybrid.

So they have seen Male X and Female Y create hybrid Z. They take hybrid Z and test the snot out of it. They decide they like hybrid Z and it has great drought tolerance and rate it accordingly.

They then send Male X and female Y to the guy producing seed corn to create a supply of Hybrid Z. Its in their best interest to have those seed corn acres produce a good supply hence the irrigation.
