Somerville, Indiana | If you run the miles you pay the tax. If it is licensed a commercial vehicle the farm miles don't apply as extra exempt, max miles drops to 5000. Just like when hauling farm products, most times a cdl is asked for, may be not required but is treated as a commercial vehicle if it is licensed as such. Road tax is based on mileage, not time of operation. The form is due August as July 31 is end of physical year. If truck was put in service in April and not used 5000 miles until the end of July no tax would be owed and 2290 could be filed same time as license renewal comes up.
Previous owner is responsible for tax periods up until you take ownership of truck and you need to have proof previous owner paid his tax.
technically, 2290 is always due in August. Miles or no miles.
