Subject: Re: hard winter wheat growers question

NE CO
"Out West" we face some of the same problems. Winter annual grasses are a problem such as cheat (downy brome), feral rye, and jointed goat grass. Some herbicides are available for control, but the best bet is to grow rotations that allow us to kill them in the spring before a spring/summer seeded crop. If we have thin stands of wheat in the spring due to drought or whatever, later rains are apt to cause a flush of russian thistle or kochia. Mustards are also a spring problem. These weeds are fairly easily controlled with one of the SUs (Ally, Amber, Finesse, etc) and 2,4-D or Banvel.

As far as fertilizer, about 40 lb N usually works here, with an expected yield on summerfallow of 30-50 bu/ac. I'm a lot drier here (15 in/yr) than east of here in KS and NE where higher yields and fertilizer rates are common. If I plant continuous crop wheat following millet or wheat, I expect yields of 20-30 bu/ac, again with about 40 lb N.
