all over Iowa | I think you're thinking almond hulls, not almond shells. Shells are the stuff you'll break your teeth on, the hull is around the shell (just like on a black walnut) and is a digestible and structural fiber source for the diet. Commonly used in dairy rations up and down the west coast. Here are pictures of an almond and it's shell, and a handful of hulls:
