You can eliminate the hose, IF you like cleaning the air filter at least every day when you're running in dusty conditions. Dad bought our TG305 used, and it initially had that hose eliminated. the air filter light would come on very quickly when running the field cultivator. A new muffler, with a good venturi in it, solved the problem.
