Mrs. Soyfarmer here.  My husband got tired of hearing me complain about my can opener - he ordered me one from Amazon called EZ-DUZ-IT and it is fabulous.  It grips the can well, has never slipped off and is quite heavy duty.  It is the squeeze together handle type that clamps over the can edge.  My old opener didn't grip well enough and the handle always pinched the palm of my hand.  Ordered one for each of our daughters and I always take mine with me when I go away for the winter.  Search for it on Amazon - fairly cheap and a good product made in the USA.  I think you'll like it.
