Sometimes nature tries to tell us things.  I would suggest you do exactly the same thing again this coming year and try to repeat your results. 

You need to make sure you have same or similar genetics which can be a large part of your difference.  Same thing for hay quality. Depending on your location, hay quality likely was very good last year.  A number of possible factors.
