+1 ,
I like this idea, providing the rest of the field is decent and graded ok.
When I was in VoAg and FFA, we took care of a lot of the school fields. We had a baseball field that needed a lot of love, but anyhow, we took a 6ft box scraper with teeth removed and kept dumping really fine topsoil ( we basically just took a loader scoop from pile and roto tilled the hell out of it ) ahead of it. I made some gauge wheels for each side so we could set it like 1" high off the exisiting grass.
Then right behind it we rolled it with a really heavy roller. We waited on rains to settle it and some we had to touch back up again or two more times, but if we rolled after a big rain, ( or when it was soft enough to do some good ), that worked slick. Ended up that field was so smooth to mow, we also must have got some different seed, as there was a little color difference in mid summer, but in spring and fall, hardly noticeable.

We rolled it at all angles....ours was more hole and pocket filling than long runs, but it would still work.

I like the football team idea too....
