As luck would have it, we have been gone for 10 days...and when I got in to my '14 this morning, the smell was there (again). This was maybe 10 minutes AFTER I responded to your post this morning.
So, I cleaned the nest out with the never-before-used-by-me cardboard trick. Figured I'd try taking my own advice (for once).
Then, reasoning that after two times of this, I needed to take more drastic steps, I tore into the cowl. The little buggers left trails in the dust under the RH end of the plastic cowl screen/cover. So that's where they were getting in. Under the plastic cowl screen, in the plenum that contains the wiper motor, the plastic fresh air intake duct protrudes up into the cowl plenum about 2-3". We are now in the process of zip-tying some AL screen-door screen over that.
Wipers have to come off to remove the plastic cowl screen. Then, a snap-in plastic cover (about 4x8") that is well sealed onto the top plenum wall gets you access to the fresh air intake.
So...a general PiTA.
I MAY post some pics of my attempt to "build the little buggers out," if I'm still sober when we finish.
