Subject: Use the lowest force for lowest wear

Sunnyvale, CA
Using the lowest force on the edge of the steering wheel will prolong life of the foam wheel. Reducing the pressure of the foam wheel on the steering wheel is done by sliding the motor in the away position as far as you can without getting slippage when in operation. The use of the wheel cover will help with this because of the better friction characteristics compared to the bare steering wheel. If you use a hobby shop drive wheel, be careful because the diameter may not be the same and that will cause the angle per trun to change. A larger diameter foam wheel will ireduce the gear ratio and increase the torque needed by the motor. If your tractor steering is too hard, and the replacement foam wheel is too large, then the motor will not have enough torque to turn the steering wheel. If your vehicle steering is light, then the electric motor torque may be OK with a larger diameter drive wheel, except and you will have to increase the angle per turn. The best alternative is to use the designed foam wheel with a steering wheel cover and light pressure.
