Kingston,Mi | Your description of a 24" bare root tree means to me that it is far to large for the hoedad, tree bar or spade. I dig a hole 1.5' to 2 ft. wide and about a 1 ft. deep, form a cone in the bottom and drape the roots over the cone then refill. Our conservation district sells thousands of 3 to 5 year old bare root trees with a stem dia. of 1/2 to 3/4 inch and root mass nearly as big as the top (always the roots are longer and we trim them back to the same length as the top).
We have farmers who use a large post hole auger (24" borrowed, begged or as a last resort, rented) then follow the instructions above. | |
