Nw Iowa
The seed we were having most problems with was a 62# test weight corn that had some sharp tips. Yes we changed feeder wheels and that helped. One company that has had real good corn uses alittle different sorting system that one number really did not like the tubes. The wheels looked exactly like old ones but they must be using a different compound. Guess we are disappointed that seed is going to be fussy as that as never been a problem with our old precision system.
Some of it is just getting a different planter going. We have been planting 24 hrs a day when conditions permit with old planter and we're hoping to gain 20-25% efficiency but hasn't been the case this year because of issues. To complicate things we used the new precision liquid fert meters for each row and have a lot of issues with that and JD liquid pump. ( had a hardi wheel drive pump that you could not control rate very easy, but was absolutely trouble free for years) it seems like last night things finally got rolling, but we are about 400 -500 acres behind where we thought we should be after about 4 days running and two young planter guys , son in law and nephew kind of look like they have been thru a war. We have had the philosophy of using one higher tech db planter rather two 1770 24 rows because of manpower and just keeping planter supplied but for first part of this spring am really questioning that. We do not want a larger planter as it screws up our side dressing and spraying widths. One positive note is that we have been almost a full day ahead with our field cultivators and in our wetter Iowa- mn soils our planting conditions have been beautiful.
