E. Kansas | If you've had a detached retina that was repaired with a "total scleral buckle", you were not to have an MRI. The buckle has some kind of metal in it.
Unfortunately, a lot of medical staff are not too well trained to first inquire if you have the buckle. You have to make it known for your family, friends, or yourself. Don't count on your medical records everywhere to have this information or for them to be checked. I've known people who were recommended by their Dr. to have an MRI, and those plans were scrapped when the Dr. was reminded about the buckle, even though it was on their records.
I don't know if this buckle procedure is still used (and really don't want to find out), but several years ago it was. There might be other type of repairs that have metal in them and you need to be aware if you have them.
