This is a pretty fair data based article from university weed scientist.

My summary:
Ag is addicted to herbicides, GMO not much help
and maybe even a hindrance to better solutions.
Total "pounds to the ground" is poor analysis
EPA, not GMO responsible for major reductions in toxicity.
Glyphosate contributes very little to overall chronic toxicity hazard.
