Altoona, WI | Are you sharing the files with other Excel users? If not, just switch to Numbers. There isn't too much of a learning curve and the files are automatically synced to iCloud. If the Excel files are fairly simple, Numbers will open them and can be saved in Excel format.
I agree with you on the subscription thing. Used to be able to just pay for Excel and be done with it. Now MS is bleeding customers on a monthly basis to use it.
