Great job making old iron run with the big dogs, a machine after my own heart. ;-)
This raises a question from my recent, not so great experience with breaking a front axle on my AF 1480. Heavy 2188 final drives for the AF combines are not common or cheap in area salvage yards, but the older JD combines are.
We got to wondering, could we adapt JD 8820 final drives to the AF combine ? The design, mounting and I believe wheel pattern is similar ?

We stopped at a local salvage yard to check out this possible swap. When I told the yard owner about this idea, he said we would not gain much. He said the JD combines do not break the axle shafts, but do break the cast final drive housing.
I had never really heard of that, but almost every JD combine on his lot had both finals stripped off. Anyone with or without hopper extensions ever break a final drive on the old JD 00 or 20 series combines ?
