Little River, TX | Do any irrigated alfalfa growers have a reasonable handle on how to convert from pan evaporation to ET?
I continue to toy with the idea of irrigation.
One method of determining irrigation needs is to consider the evaporation transpiration of the alfalfa stand.
I have records showing an average of 0.38" per day of pan evaporation for June, July, & August. Tx A&M U in their infinate wisdom show 0.23" EvapoTranspiration of water per day for that time period. This is for alfafa and perianial pastures.
Would pan evaporation really be 40% more than EvapoTranspiration, for alfalfa?
Is ET a usefully tool, for irrigation?
This all may just be an exercise in frustration, because with my available water supply, I may be able to have the soil at capacity by the start of June or July and then just fall slowly behind in July and August, watering 24 hours a day.
I have the advantage of having clay loam soil 25 feet deep, the disadvantage is if the soil profile ever becomes dry it is impossible to put enough water on it to do any good. (Here) | |
