Epson has had the little generic ink cartridge makers in court all last year, trying to put them out of business
It seems these little guys are messing with Epson's sales strategy of nearly giving away printers, then charge outrageous prices for the ink cartridges to keep it running.

The latest dodge by my ink supplier is to sell me a "will fit an Epson " ink cartridge that of coarse will not work without the little electronic chip mounted on the end of the cartridge. The electronic chip to make an Epson printer recognize that a cartridge is installed, comes in a separate little bag marked "gift", kind of like the prize in a box of cracker jack. The buyer must remove the "gift from it's little plastic bag and do whatever he wishes to do with it, which may include snapping it into the ink cartridge he is about to install into his printer. Whatta deal. ;-)
