Subject: Re: metal detecctor in forage chopper question....How do they detect?

There is a magnet in the bottom feed roll which is surrounded with a coil of wired. When steel enters the magnetic field, it disturbs the magnetic field which induces a current in the coil of wire. This energy is measured in millivolts in the metal detector controller. Steel that is already in the magnetic field will not disturb the field, yet stainless steel feedrolls will help prevent false trips due to sudden upward motion of the feed rolls.
