It's been a good many years since I've had a 1680, so I can't remember how many switches it has, but our 2388 has one in the tank and one at the cradle. When these go out, it can cause crazy stuff like this. One might just be out of adjustment too.

IIRC these switches can be bypassed in a pinch by making a jumper to go in the plug.
