Subject: new style axle shafts and couplers on early 2188

Boone, Iowa
Last year, I had an axle shaft coupler spline wear out and stopped the combine. We finished the fall with a couple of new couplers. I am now trying to fix things before this fall. I bought the new axle shafts from A&I, but are made for the 2 piece collars to hold the couplers in place, instead of the 3/8" bolt thru the coupler. Has anyone used the new style axles and couplers on the earlier combines that had the bolts in the couplers? The shafts that come out of the brake assembly on the later models are a different part number and must have the snap ring groove in a different location. If I assemble everything in the correct position, there is not enough room to get on set of the collars in the groove. I can flip on coupler end for end and things will fit, but I have about 1/4" or more of slop when moving the axle in and out before the collars stop on the couplers. Is this slop too much? Thanks.
