There is a 32 bit version of Vista. The 32 bit version is much more common than the 64 bit. The 64 bit is the oddball. I have not used the 64 bit version, but I think it is supposed to have a compatibility mode. Whether it works is another question. Unless you have a serious need for the 64 bit version, I would return it and get a machine with the 32 bit version.
