Subject: RE: Fall applied chicken litter with cover crop

Roanoke, IN
Most N in chicken litter is already in organic firm - >75% if memory serves me right. So maybe only 10-15 lbs per ton NH4? Not much to lose. My experience has been litter stimulates weed seed in your field, not weed seed in the litter itself.

Litter is a hot product and doesn't play well in a compost pile. Plus you lose a lot of C to the air. I would rather sheet compost it in my field and have a cover crop take up the nutrients.
