I get good tonnage off of oats seeded as late as the 2nd week of August. I have mixed some rye in, but didn't have good winter survival after grazing it out with the ground just starting to freeze up.
If not grazing this fall, maybe some hairy vetch with the rye. I am going to put some in this fall to try. A little cheap red clover would likely make it through the winter, but won't have much growth by May 1.
