Subject: RE: Drone Competition

Read a lot , sometimes respond. Background, retired farmer, private pilot and aircraft owner, 10 years of RC airplanes, drones, gliders, small and larger nitro planes, AMA and AMA club officer, Safety Officer. The first thing came to my mind was, what if there is an accident. Out of control model, hits parked car, or person, props cuts across body, who pays the repair or hospital bill. Have some liability insurance to protect your self and event organizers. Thru the AMA, we have 1 million insurance to protect club members,  guest, and field owner whom lease the land from. In 26 years, no property or physical accidents, but many $300 to $1,000 airplanes destroyed by pilot error. Do have a 50 gal burn barrel on the site.

One additional true story. A local corporate person moved into the area and told the story, he was a week end flight instructor with other instructors at an airport. One weekend another instructor asked him to give a certain student learning to fly, a review on his flying skills. He went up with him, he wrote up , student needs further attention on certain flying skills, and at the end of his log book entry wrote, "Not Ready For Solo", signed his name and instructor's number. Five years later he gets lawsuit notice to be in court, filed by the widow and her attorney. They sued every flight instructor who made an entry in his pilots log book and the FAA designated flight instructor who passed him for the private pilots license. He said it cost him several thousand in lawyer fees and time to have his name removed from the suit. His entry, "Not Ready For Solo", saved him from going to court.

The drone racing would be fun to watch
