I'm old enough to remember when being a scientist meant respecting everyone's opinions, even when you disagree. The purpose of science is to test everyone's beliefs, to see which ones are best-supported by the weight of evidence. It also meant staying away from politics; strictly sticking to the facts.

Nowadays it looks like somebody kidnapped Mr. Science and replaced him with a bad-tempered imposter. Those who disagree with the "consensus" are called names and dismissed, ridiculed or ignored. Questioning the "consensus" means loss of status, tenure, grant money or jobs. I'd call that a "consensus of fear."

I'm also old enough to have read about the consensus that we were heading for another ice age. Climate-change advocates claim that there never was any such consensus. I was there, and I disagree. Some of the temperature records that proved it have also been shredded. How's that for denial?
