The whitewood (SPF - spruce, pine, fir) is what's typically found in the smaller dimensioned lumber such as 2x4 & 2x6's on residential construction. Yellow pine is seen more for joist (2x10, 2x12's) & sometimes trusses. Yellow pine is denser & stronger. I would follow the guidelines from the engineer associated with the building. With the 2x4's running horizontal, it's going to add a lot of strength. SPF material will probably be fine.
