Humeston, IA

Cliff, what would you use the DDGS for?  Creep feed, cow wintering, calf backgrounding, finishing?

For calves, you'd probably want to still use some corn to balance out the protein in the DDGS.  Depending on what kind of hay you are feeding, you could probably feed 25% DDGS down to 5%, with 50% hay and the rest corn.  I figure 2-3 lbs/day of DDGS/head for around 1.5 lbs/day of gain.

You'll also need to add some calcium, as DDGS is lacking in this.  Some companies have a pack for this; Kent has one called Gluten Aide, but it should work with DDGS as well.  I'm working on putting one together myself for sale, too.  You'd use about 0.25 lbs/day/head of this product to provide calcium and trace minerals.

Again, depending upon the forage quality, a guy could save $10-40/head when growing calves from 500 to 800 lbs by using DDGS.

Would this be coming out of Big River?
