Thanks for your story, It was the first thing on my mind when I read about the snowstorm in west Texas and New Mexico.
I traveled thru that country some years ago, and visited some dairies, everything is width open in those States, no protection .



Most are open lots, but honestly with a storm like that, had they been in barns, many would've collapsed and probably killed even more animals. Everything up here is in a barn (not to mention barns with snow load figured into their designs) and storms much smaller than that one bring them down often. We had the center portion of an older freestall barn collapse 15 years ago from snow. Got lucky that it somehow only hurt one cow.


Looking through that farms page it looks like they tried to prepare for it as best as possible.
