You are fortunate due to the fact that your problem has several solutions. Also, you are fortunate because you are smart enough to realize you have a problem. One solution would be to add braces to the rafters and joists in this area to make trusses. If this is possible, additional support would not be required. Another solution would be to add a strong-back in the attic with 2 X 12 or 2 X 10 lumber. With the attic room these solutions may not be possible. Also, getting 20' timbers into the attic could be a problem.

The other option is adding ceiling support in this area. An 8" steel I beam will provide the support you need for an 18' span with minimal reduction in ceiling height. You will need a fairly heavy 8" I beam but I am not sure of the exact weight you will need. Other posters mentioned a variety of wooden beams. These solutions will work but you will sacrifice 12 - 16" of ceiling height.
