Martinsville, Ohio
I think it is a good one.

Whack the plant off with a sharp knife at 6 inches or so above the ground, make another cut another 6 inches or more. I test one plant per acre or so to get a random sample of the field. This usually happens in October here, could be September.

We also keep paring down our N rates but with all the water this year and high priced N, it is easy to run out of gas as they say. Most of the corn is really green here so I think we can keep testing and looking.

I do think I see the shades of green diminishing over the years which is probably a good thing because we over applied N for years.

I prefer the foliar or tissue test but I am looking for nutrient balance. If you are trying to limit N to what is needed I think you are doing the better test for you.

Have to admit that was a pretty good issue.

Good luck.
