Have never done a PTO brake on these before. Early 4020 syncro. Had jd get me the parts, but from what they gave me it looks like I only need to split at clutch housing and pull the deck and top cover. I was thinking I needed to split it twice. It manual is of no help .... Anyone with experience?? TIA....

You only need to split it between clutch housing and rear end housing. PTO brake cone will be right there after you roll it apart, trans cover will need removed to gain access to the upper 3 split bolts.

Are you sure the brake is shot.........early (non console) S/Range tractors don't usually wear the PTO brake out unless moisture in the oil has caused the bonding adhesive to fail. Are you sure the lever detent under the dash don't need lubed to allow the PTO lever to go back enough to apply the brake? Or that the PTO clutch is dragging?
