Scottsboro, AL
All of the sap wood (the white part shown on the posts) will rot away relatively quickly, but the heart wood (the red centers) is what is really rot resistant and will last.

I have a lot of catopa(spelling?) in bottom ground. They are 40-60' tall and strait as an arrow. Did railroads plant those for timbers?

Do you mean catawba (I think technically it is catalpa)? If so, I don't know anything about railroads using them, and I have never seen a straight one. We have them, but the trunks are twisted like a screw and limbs going every which way. Their best use, that I know of, besides great shade, is the worms that come and eat all the leaves off are some of the best fishing bait you will ever see.
