We recently tried to do this with a regular router and could not make it work. We have a Sierra Wireless 595U EVDO card with Sprint as the carrier. We have the USB Air Card attached to the desktop and attempted to use a Linksys router to allow the laptop to connect to the internet through the desktop and air card. It may work in theory, but we were not smart enough to make it work in practice.
Before the Linksys attempt however, we had purchased a MBE 1000 Cradlepoint EVDO Router from 3Gstore.com. It worked right out of the box with NO setup problems. We would have kept it, even though it was a little pricy, but it did not give us the range we were after, so we returned it. It had enough range to connect the laptop anywhere in the house or the yard, but would not reach the workshop which is about 1000 ft. away. We tried the Linksys because we were told it had enough range to do what we wanted, but we couldn't make it work with the Air Card.
