Down here we only need to break the ice on the coldest days, sometimes every day for a week or so at a time. But the Cobett waterers are trouble-free and don't need attention for much of the rest of the year.

Besides, I was either feeding nearby or just needed to check the cattle anyway. Breaking the ice once a day for part of the year is not a hassle.
