In your case I'd say that should work (assuming they don't need the old ones back, as Carl said). Hopefully it turns out to just be a dead motherboard and you can move on with life, happily and with more memory than before. I guess the one warning I'd give would be to check and make sure that the new motherboard is the same or similar and takes the same memory.
