I usually figure on getting about 12-13 also. 18 was a nice surprise, and that 27 ton field was just good overall and the guy let it grow way beyond when we would normally cut it. He was after quantity not quality, and he got it.
That is pretty impressive. What was the moisture or what would the DM tons be?
I'm trying to get some laser leveling done on piece of ground in time to plant titicale and peas. It is some really good ground and I've made a deal to have a guy buy it standing to silage for his beef cows, I've always wanted to try growing it on good ground and push it a little just to see how much I could grow. I sure wouldn't want to hay it if it gets that big though.
We've been getting 5 ton DM on some marginal ground, with only two irrigations and 70-100 units of N. Pretty impressive stuff.
As to the original question, make sure you have some N to start this winter. I've been gassing on 50 u in the fall and topdressing 50 in the spring. It will grow all winter, even here. I'd imagine in NE it would be a little warmer, and you'd get even more winter growth. |
