I have the top shelf of a bought and paid for beer gut protecting my lap from food or beverage spills. Not much gets past that thing unless its solid and rolls. My Grandpa always said "if you have a piece of equipment you are proud of build a shed over it" unfortunately I built a football stadium over a lawn mower.
