...tip one...use low fat ground beef. Tip two...tomato paste has a lot of flavor, but a little garlic and onion goes a long way to adding complexity. You can add some ketchup...just not too much, it's too runny. A little chili powder is good. A lot isn't. Molasses...(a couple tablespoonsful per pound of meat) can make your sloppy joe a completely different animal. If you don't have molasses...a 1/4 cup of brown sugar works pretty well too. Some folks like green pepper in their sloppy joes too. Got to get it cooked, you don't want it crunchy.
